Auto Repair Tips Mechanics Don’t Want You To Know

New Tires December 19, 2016

TIP! Don’t sign anything until you know the total cost of repairs. If you need clarification, ask the service advisor for additional information before repairs commence.

Fixing your car is priority one. If you don’t have a working car, it can be hard to travel. You may think you have to spend a lot of money on auto repairs; however, this is not usually the case. There are many simple repairs that even a novice can fix on their own.

Battery Charger

TIP! Have records for your car on hand. One good place to keep them is in a folder in the trunk right above your spare tire.

Bring a battery charger with you in your trunk. Dead batteries happen more often than you imagine, and you can help other people if you take a battery charger along in your vehicle. Make sure you learn the points on your car where the battery charger should be connected.

TIP! Be wary of unscrupulous mechanics who make unnecessary repairs to your vehicle. A reliable mechanic will tell you if any parts are worn down and need replacing.

Regularly check your radiator’s performance. To do this, you need to allow your car to run several minutes, and then turn off the engine. You are now ready to open up your hood. You should never open your radiator whenever your car is turned on. Use a dipstick to gauge how much radiator fluid you have, keeping in mind that most types need to be diluted with water.

TIP! Remember that getting OEM parts is important. These parts are original and from the manufacturer.

When choosing a mechanic, ask if they’ve worked on your model of car before. If they have experience with your type of car, they are more likely able to correctly diagnose and fix the problems your vehicle is having.

TIP! Make sure the mechanic can work on your particular car. While the basic components are all the same, there is going to to be a big difference in the way say a Hummer versus a Smart car utilize the space under the hood.

Your car should be washed regularly so that rust doesn’t become a problem. Cars eventually rust, but you can put off the process by washing off chemicals or salt quickly. Use a good wax to protect your paint job as much as possible.

TIP! If you’re having major service performed by an auto repair shop, always get more than one estimate for the job being done. The shop you’ve gone to may be trying to rip you off.

Make sure to study your owners manual. The auto repair shop people will ask you specific information about your car. After reading the manual, you might just find that you have an easy fix on your hands.

TIP! See if you can find someone who is knowledgeable about cars to do the work for you. If they possess sufficient experience, they can typically do jobs for far less cost.

Before paying your mechanic for any work done, make sure to take it for a short test drive first, to make sure everything is working as it should. If you don’t, you may find that you paid for nothing.

TIP! Talk to your friends about their auto repair experiences before choosing a repair shop. You may have less of a search to do if they can give you the name of someone great.

Consider using OEM parts. These are original manufacturer parts. Generic parts might be cheaper, but they may not be good enough quality. A great deal can cost you tons down the road.

TIP! Make sure that you clean your car in the winter as well. While it probably doesn’t seem like there’s a point, winter time can be damaging to your vehicle.

Try figuring out the issue prior to going to get repairs. Knowing what your car needs can help you avoid being talked into repairs it doesn’t need. As you’ve probably heard, there are some mechanics that like to lie about issues to make some more money.

TIP! When auto repair issues are complicated, don’t diagnose them yourself. You aren’t an expert! It may be a problem that’s harder to fix than you think.

A spare tire and a jack are valuable items to have in case of an emergency. Most of the new cars of today have them in the trunk. You don’t need to be stuck somewhere you don’t know and need to pay a lot for towing. It’s far more convenient and less costly to take care of it yourself.

Tool Kit

TIP! After paying to replace old parts, make sure the mechanic gives you the old ones that were removed. If he won’t, he may not have replaced them in the first place.

Keep a DIY tool kit in your trunk. You will want to have the tools necessary to change a tire, and they likely came with the vehicle. Make sure you have a wrench that can loosen the lug nuts on your tires. Your tool kit should contain these items: socket wrenches, ratcheting tools, a wrench for torque and one that is adjustable, and both a Phillips and a flat head screwdriver as well. You don’t want to settle for buying cheap tools. Invest in high-quality tools that you will own forever.

TIP! Put all the receipts you have for auto repairs in a plastic file, and keep this file inside your car. You can either divide them up into basic maintenance and repairs, or just keep them in chronological order.

You do not have to always take your vehicle to an expensive repair shop to get it running again. Sometimes, you can fix your car yourself. This article shows you what to do in future.
